More Than an Aircraft

There are some aircraft that leave a lasting impression, and for me, the Avro Vulcan has always been one of them. With its unmistakable delta wing, imposing presence and the extraordinary sound of its four Rolls-Royce Olympus engines, the Vulcan represents a remarkable chapter in British aviation history.

Although XH558's flying days are now behind her, her story is far from over.

Thanks to the dedication of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, its engineers, volunteers and supporters, this incredible aircraft continues to capture imaginations and inspire people of all ages. I've been fortunate enough to work with the Trust, photographing XH558, the people who care for her and the visitors who come to experience a piece of aviation history.

Through these images, I hope to share not only the remarkable engineering of the aircraft, but also the passion and commitment that surround her.

The People

The Vulcan has always been about more than metal and machinery. It's the engineers, volunteers, veterans, enthusiasts and families who bring her story to life. Their enthusiasm and dedication are just as important to document as the aircraft herself.

From the Crowd to Behind the Camera

My connection with XH558 goes back long before I began photographing her professionally.

Growing up, one of the highlights of visiting the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) was always seeing the Vulcan. There was something truly special about watching that enormous aircraft take to the skies, and hearing the unmistakable roar of its engines.

No matter how many times I saw her, the excitement never faded.

In 2015, during XH558's final flying season, I attended RIAT and purchased a Corgi model of the aircraft as a keepsake. At the end of the show, I visited the Vulcan to the Sky Trust's tent and had the model signed by the engineers, pilots and volunteers who had helped make the Vulcan's remarkable flying story possible.

What started as a simple souvenir became something much more meaningful — a reminder of the people and passion behind this extraordinary aircraft. Today, that very same signed model sits proudly at the Vulcan Trust's site in Doncaster. Years later, having turned my passion for photography into a career, I've had the privilege of returning to XH558 from a completely different perspective.

This time, I'm behind the camera, photographing the aircraft and the people dedicated to preserving her legacy.

In 2015, I took home a model signed by the people who kept the Vulcan flying. Today, I have the privilege of photographing the people keeping her legacy alive.

Supporting the Vulcan to the Sky Trust

Preserving an aircraft as extraordinary as XH558 requires much more than engineering knowledge.

It takes dedication, specialist skills, countless hours of work and the ongoing support of people who believe this remarkable part of British aviation history deserves to be protected.

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust continues to play an important role in preserving XH558's heritage and sharing the story of the aircraft with new generations. Having had the opportunity to work alongside the Trust, I've seen some of the enthusiasm, knowledge and commitment that go into caring for this iconic aircraft.

From the people maintaining her systems to those welcoming visitors and sharing their experiences, it's a collective effort that deserves recognition. Whether you've followed XH558 for decades or are discovering her story for the first time, I'd encourage you to explore the Trust's work, discover upcoming events and consider supporting the people keeping her legacy alive.
